They did escape to the outside world. And then they meet a sole human resident, an Old Man, the first old person they've ever seen.
Now knowing that The Sanctuary is a myth, they realizes they must go back, bringing the Old Man as proof that their beliefs are all lies.
In the end, Logan went back to confront the computer in a battle and free up the entire society.
