Hi I.T. people, I'm so sorry but I may be asking some stupid questions here .....

1) Are .AVI files similar to .WMV files?  Can we play .AVI type of files using Window Media Player or Real Player?...or do we need to download another software to play it (if so, where to download)?

2) To play .FLV files, do we need to download a special FLV Player?!?  Is it safe and free to download?

(I would love to download YouTube files so that I can keep a copy in my computer, but still not 100% sure what's the best way & easiest way to do so (I may not know how to do it if it's too complicated ))

I'm no IT people, but from my very limited knowledge,

(1) AVI is one of the most primitive formats for video files, so most players (such as Window Media Player or even a VCD player for your TV) would recognize it; no need to download special players for it (except for the codec issue; just go to that link & install)

(2) FLV cannot be played on Window Media Player and you do need to download an FLV player. I'm not sure which one is safe (I forgot where I downloaded mine, sorry) 

But it seems that if you use bro fumoon's approach, and turn the u-tube file into your own AVI file, then there's no need to bother with any FLV.

The best way to find out is just experiment with it: use fumoon's suggested link http://www.download3000.com/download-YouTube_Downloader-count-reg-19063.html to save the u-tube video on your PC as xxx.AVI. Then just double-click it. Chances are that Window Media Player will start and play the song. But you MAY not see video (only audio). If that's the case, just install the codecs by visiting http://www.free-codecs.com/XP_Codec_Pack_download.htm .

I have successfully downloaded the Youtube downloader lah!!  So happy!!   Thanks to everyone who has contibuted here

I ended up using the method as suggested by ar_woo & fumoon, ie. used http://www.download3000.com/download-YouTube_Downloader-count-reg-19063.html to save the u-tube video on your PC as xxx.AVI....however, I also had the same problem whereby I could not see the video (only audio though), so had to install the codecs by visiting http://www.free-codecs.com/XP_Codec_Pack_download.htm ...  and after that, I could see the video, so it worked!

But still have one question, I now use Window Media Player to play those downloaded .AVI files, however I find that the quality is not very good (ie. the videos are not very clear)...I would like to ask those people who used this method (such as ar_woo & fumoon or any other oldcakes) whether the same thing happens to you or not, or whether it's because I am using "Window Media Player" to play back the .AVI files which makes the clips look a bit unclear? ...or whether it is normal for the downloaded .AVI to be a bit unclear as compare to when you actually watch the clips on the YouTube website?  Thanks!

Yes, my saved .AVI files are not as clear as the originals on u-tube. I think some loss is inevitable for the FLV-->AVI conversion. But I'm still very glad I get to keep the files. I'm particularly looking forward to watching these files when travelling, once I get a portabloe player (which cost just a few hundred but cannot play FLV). Moreover, if you want better quality, you can save a copy of the FLV file as well, which may be more clear when you play it (with FLV player). 我好知足架! 幸福非必然...(can we translate that as "we cannot take Shiawase for granted" ) 有得睇已經好開心!

...but I still didn't "死心" and did some more experiment earlier on my Window Media Player, and I think I found the reason (or part of the reason) as to why the quality was quite poor on my screen, it's because I had set the "Video Size" on my Window Media Player at "200%"!...so the video was "enlarged" to 200% (...the larger pixels had make the clip look quite blurry)...but when it was changed to 100%, it looked ok lah (I think)...try it if that is also your problem.

...you mentioned about "portable players" for playing video clips, are they called "MP4" players? or ???  What file types do they support (if not FLV, can they play .AVI?)  and were there any recommendations regarding which brand is good already existed on this oldcake.net forum (if so, I might check it out)?  (sorry for asking so many questions ...I'm trying to see what's popular out there in the market (& what's the "in" thing ar))  Thanks!

Those portable players look just like slim MP3 players, except they have a tiny screen. They're everywhere now (e.g. Broadway/Best/Fortress). The first time I saw them was upstairs at 信和. They can play MP4, AVI, all kinds of stuff EXCEPT FLV (I was so disappointed when the store owner told me that, then I asked him if he knew how to convert FLV-->AVI, but "no"). That's why I didn't buy it before. So happy now! (not sure there's any discussion here on MP4 players (I think that's the name), but it's just a few hundred bucks anyway...)

Need some help from oldcakes please!

It appears that we can no longer download Youtube clips using the YOUTUBE Downloader method   (I got a message which says "HTTP/ forbidden"!)

I was able to download clips previously using the method as suggested earlier on this thread, but I tried again yesterday & today and got the same error message. 

Is it because Youtube has now used a new technology to stop people from downloading?

If anyone has any details, please post here, thank you!

下載Google Video 與 YouTube網站上的影片

最近常常在Google Video跟YouTube上面亂逛看影片，其中當然不乏一些有趣或是想抓下來收藏的影片，在網路上找到一些方法後，在這邊先把它整理一下。



其實主要就是從Google Video跟YouTube將flv檔抓下來。想找Google Video的flv檔案位址，首先要看影片頁面的網頁原始碼，找到flash影片瀏覽器的swf檔的位置(應該是叫做googleplayer.swf，搜尋一下吧)，將後面的videoUrl參數複製下來，然後使用php的urldecode或是Java Script的unescape函式，就可以得到正確的flv檔案位址。YouTube的就更簡單啦，只要將網址中的watch.php?v=改成get_video.php?video_ id=就是flv檔案的位址了。

update:現在YouTube還要加上&t={一段亂七八糟的字串}，這串參數可以在原始碼內flash object的地方找到。

不過懶人如我就不想每次都要去翻原始碼或是要手動改網址列再抓檔，所以我寫了一個php script自動去找flv的檔案位址：GooTube FLV Retriever，下面簡單寫一下使用方法。



先複製Google Video或是YouTube的影片頁面的網址。

將網址列貼上GooTube FLV Retriever的input field中，因為script會自動判斷是Google Video或是YouTube的網址，所以沒什麼其他的選項需要選的。

送出之後會得到一個flv檔案的網址列。為了方便，我順便做了連結，這樣就可以直接按右鍵另存新檔囉。

按右鍵另存新檔，記得將副檔名改為flv。

下載完畢之後，就可以看到下載回來的flv檔了(廢話)，如果你有flash video的撥放程式，就可以直接打開來觀看囉。

如果沒有flv player或是想將flv影片檔轉成wmv或是mpeg格式的話怎麼辦？沒關係，我們可以用Riva VX: Riva FLV Encoder，下面簡略的講一下如何用Riva FLV Encoder將flv檔轉成mpg。

安裝完Riva FLV Encoder後，啟動程式，按下Browse。

選取想要轉換的flv檔。

選完之後回到程式的畫面，你可以選擇輸出的目錄，預設是桌面。

手動更改output file的file name，將副檔名改成mpg。這邊有點奇怪，這程式並沒有選項讓你選擇輸出的類型，而是直接更改副檔名，我不知道這到底算好還是壞(不過他本來就說是FLV Encoder，所以沒別的選項可以選也是可以理解的，但是他真的可以轉成mpg就是了)。

按下Encode就開始轉檔囉。

轉檔的時候程式的畫面會變白，等到畫面恢復就表示好囉！下面也會顯示：Encoding Successful! 太好啦，這樣就不用每台電腦都要裝FLV Player才能看了。

p.s. : Riva FLV Encoder是個Freeware，快樂的用吧

MP4是一種影片檔案格式，畫面比flv精細。

我用的是free music zilla軟件，下載的是flv同mp4都無問題，而且操作極簡單，速度也不錯。下面網站有中文說明：

~ I selected the youtube clip I want to convert to wmv, then type in my email address on the tubefire website ~ then after awhile, I got an email notification from them saying the film has been converted to wmv (it's in Japanese, but I think they did say it's done), then I tried clicking on the link(s) they sent on the email (there were a few links, so I tried clicking on a few), but still can't find the wmv file for downloading, what have I done wrong, mrenvy?
